National Dairy Research Institute

The National Dairy Research Institute is our country’s premier Dairy Research institution. ICAR-NDRI plays a crucial role in developing quality human resource for the dairy sector of the country by developing need based educational programmes and introducing innovations in learning styles and pedagogy.
The Institute undertakes basic and applied research, teaching and extension activities helping towards dairy development, animal productivity, development of new products and practices for the benefit of millions of farmers and consumers. Over the 99 years, the Institute has shown remarkable development and expertise in different areas of dairy production, processing, management and human resource development.
ICAR NDRI has two regional stations viz. Southern Regional Station at Bangalore and Eastern Regional Station Station at Kalyani to serve the cause of dairying in the southern and eastern states respectively. The University Grants Commission conferred the Institute with Deemed University status in March 1989. Currently, the Institute is rated as an outstanding University and has secured first rank amongst the Agricultural Universities of our country.

Mandate

  1. Conducting research in the areas of Dairy Production, Processing and Marketing
  2. Demand driven ‘Human Resource Development’ to meet the requirements of Dairy Industry & R&D Institutions.
  3. Dissemination of innovative dairy production and processing technologies for socio-economic transformations.

Achievments and Honors

  1. The Institute has the unique distinction of having been ranked first among all Agricultural Universities of India including 4 Deemed Universities consecutively three times in the years 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19.

  2. The Institute was also conferred ‘Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institute award’ for its outstanding achievements in the field of dairying. The award was presented by the Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, in July 2014.

  3. In the recent years, the Institute has achieved landmark success in the area of cloning by producing the world’s first buffalo cloned calves using ‘hand guided cloning’ through somatic cells derived from new born calf, seminal plasma, embryonic stem cell as well as adult animal cell.

  4. It was awarded Agriculture Leadership Award 2013 for setting up a benchmark in dairy research by contributing in research efforts to augment milk productivity, value addition, quality and safety of milk and economic and marketing aspects related to dairying. Prior to this, the Institute also received Education Leadership Award in recognition of the talent and leadership among educational institutes across India.

  5. In addition, many of its scientists have also won different awards and recognitions for their outstanding research.
